About Us

University Information Technologies (UNIT) is comprised of 9 divisions and is located in 5 locations on campus.

What UNIT Does

UNIT maintains the University-wide computing infrastructure for academic and administrative use, utilizing SUN Microsystems platform and running the SUN Solaris operating system, and Windows operating system on 100+ servers throughout campus. All central and distributed computers and about 8000+ workstations and other devices are connected to the campus network, providing each user with access to any computing resource.

Every faculty and staff member has a PC or laptop connected to the campus network. Phone, cable, and high speed data connectivity is extended to all residence hall rooms. Citrix and Secure Remote Access Service facilitate access to network and World Wide Web resources from off-campus locations.

UNIT also operates videoconferencing and multi-media facilities in Tolentine and provides academic software applications, delivered over the network using Citrix.

The University websites are designed, maintained and managed by UNIT staff. The Novasis online student information system,  and Banner administrative system are maintained and managed by UNIT staff.

UNIT Computer Labs

In addition to many college and department-specific computing labs, UNIT manages two public student labs, located in Mendel and Tolentine, equipment in Falvey Library, Connelly Center and Mendel lounges, and Donahue Hall, totaling over 170 workstations. The labs are open 18-24 hours a day, with consultants on duty to assist students. All computers support general-purpose applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and data base management systems (Microsoft Office XP suite), plus course-specific software.

User Support and the Tech Zone

The TechZone, located in Vasey Hall, assists students with University-promoted laptop computers and other PCs. Technical support is complemented by Web-based documentation. The use of the University owned/managed computing, information, and network resources is governed by policies included in the Student Handbook and accessible on the University's Web site.

In addition to the TEchZone, UNIT operates the University Help Desk, located in Vasey Hall, and provides technical support and service from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

User-IDs and Passwords

User-ID's and passwords are assigned to students, faculty and staff prior to their arrival on campus, and provide access to email, the Web, and other student-designated computing resources.

Web Tools

All students and employees receive a personal Web site  and email account. A  personalized portal, Novasis, gives them access to course schedules, course-related materials, e-learning tools, and employee information such as vacation and parking registration. It also allows students to perform most administrative functions, such as registration or grade-lookup on the Web.

Training & Workshops

UNIT offers a wide range of non-credit seminars that cover supported software packages as well as general computing and technology issues. The UNIT section of the University's publication Blueprints keeps the user community informed about new developments, upcoming seminars, and other general computing and network topics.

University Card Office

The University Card Office provides students with a smart card (WildCard) that functions as a meal-plan card, library card, access card to dorms, classrooms, and labs, and a debit card for purchases on-campus and at selected off-campus stores. Also, through the University's affiliation with a bank, it serves as an ATM card.
